Our project: Surveying Holocaust Education
Our primary concern was studying the difference between Anne Frank's role in private education, religious education, and public education. We surveyed 100 Brandeis students, 50 who attended public high schools and 50 who attended private high schools.
The Survey
1. What type of school did you go to? (public, private, religious, etc)
2. Did you learn about the Holocaust in school?
3. If so, in what classes did you learn about it?
4. Did you read The Diary of Anne Frank in school?
5. If so, what grade were you in?
6. What other texts were used to teach you about the Holocaust?
7. What text do you feel was most helpful as a learning tool?
8. Was the Holocaust taught to you from any other mediums? (Plays, movies, music)
9. What role do you think Anne Frank plays in Holocaust Education?
Demographic Questions
1. What religion do you identify with, if any?
2. What state or country are you from?
3. What is your current age?
4. What ethnicity do you identify as?
5. What gender do you identify as?
Results
Only 38% of surveyed students read Anne’s diary while 83 out of 138 read Night. 23 of the surveyed people learned about the Holocaust exclusively in history class and 8 respondents from China had no Holocaust education prior to college. Overall this showed us that there is not one way to teach students about the Holocaust.
