The Anne Frank House
The
Anne Frank House is located in central Amsterdam in The Netherlands. It is
a historic house that has been made into a museum to commemorate the legacy of Anne
Frank. Anne hid in what she called the “Secret Annex” of this house during
World War II to escape Nazi persecution. She hid with her family and four other
people from July 1942 until 1944. It was here that Anne wrote about her life in hiding in her diary. Miep Gies and Bep Voskuijil hid the Frank
family until the members of the Annex were anonymously
betrayed and reported to Nazi authorities. Otto Frank, the only member of
Anne’s family to survive the war, returned to Amsterdam and published Anne’s
diary as The Diary of Anne Frank in Dutch in 1947. In 1957, the Anne Frank
Foundation was created to protect the house and preserve the property. In May
1960, the museum opened with a permanent exhibition on Anne Frank and her life
in hiding and even maintains exhibitions on persecution and discrimination. The
museum had a record of 1.2 million visitors in 2013. Below is a link to the official Anne Frank House website.

We’re so fortunate here, away from the turmoil. We wouldn’t have to give a moment’s thought to all this suffering if it weren’t for the fact that we’re so worried about those we hold dear, whom we can no longer help. I feel wicked sleeping in a warm bed, while somewhere out there my dearest friends are dropping from exhaustion or being knocked to the ground. (The Diary of Anne Frank, 11/19/1942.5)
